Worldlink RespOrg Services And Information

What Is A RespOrg?

A RespOrg, technically the  Responsible Organization, is the entity designated to manage and administer a customer's toll-free service records in the 800 Service Management System (SMS/800).

The SMS/800 system was created to provide for the implementation of toll free number portability which provides customers with the ability to switch toll free carriers.  SMS/800 is a centralized system that supports centralized toll-free service administration in North America.  It was authorized by the FCC and became effective May 1, 1993.  In January of 1994 Canada implemented toll free number portability and the SMS/800 system became linked to Canadian Network Management (Bell Canada) database system in Canada.

Key Benefits of Having An Independent RespOrg

  1. Carrier neutrality: An independent RespOrg performs services for the contracting client. The RespOrg enjoys no financial advantage by routing (or mapping) a clients' numbers one way as opposed to another.
  2. Disaster avoidance: An independent RespOrg can have your toll free numbers route over more than one carrier.  The typical situation is when your toll free carrier is the default RespOrg and the only carrier transporting your toll free calls.  In the event of a problem, your toll free service may be negatively impacted.
  3. Faster changes: An independent RespOrg typically implements your routing changes in a much more timely manner that the carrier.
  4. 24/7 Service: Our personnel provide continuous service to ensure minimum problems or down time.

Who Is My Responsible Organization?

If you have a toll free number in the United States and/or Canada, your toll free number is controlled by a RespOrg.  The RespOrg, or Responsible Organization, is the organization responsible for controlling and maintaining your toll free number (generally this is your toll free service provider).

According to FCC regulations, you have the right to keep your existing toll free number and transfer it to the toll free provider of your choice. This is known as the change of Resp Org process.  We have automated this process to save you time and increase efficiency.

Why Would I Change My RespOrg?

If your current toll free service provider doesn't offer the services or pricing you desire, you may wish to change to a new toll free service provider.  Changing toll free providers is very easy and requires one simple form to change your RespOrg.
